Although it was taken 2 years ago today, there is something about this picture that is absolutely typical of our family. Whenever we go for a walk it is always the three of them racing off to go to whatever pub they have in mind, whilst I drag behind looking at the scenery, taking photos, or just playing with something I've found which seemingly could only be of interest to me. And it's such a drag having to visit the pub all the time ;-)

Tips On Completing Project 365

I also looked at some reasons not to do it; though I hope I haven't put anyone off. Anyway, today is the next logical step: For anyone who is interested in undertaking Project 365, some tips on based on what I found useful.

------------------------------------------------------------------ When I completed my Project 365 last week I rather rashly declared that I would recommend it to anyone. With the benefit of a week to ponder I can say that I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone: I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who is already a brilliant photographer, I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who had no desire to improve their photography and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who is already so busy doing other things that they couldn’t afford to spend a reasonable amount of time on it. That said, I still think that when those three groups are discounted there must still be a sizeable number of people who would both benefit from and enjoy undertaking Project 365. If you think that it could be for you, then the reasons given above are what I would expect most people would gain from it. Indeed I am that impressed with Project 365 that in January I intend to start another one. Though this time I will set myself some different ground rules, but enough of that I don’t need to think about it at the moment. Coming soon on this blog: Tips on completing Project 365

-------------------------------------------------------------------- Well it's been a year, but I've done it. There were times when I thought I might run out of ideas, but in the end I crossed the line with plenty more in the tank. I've learned a lot over the year and will try to summarise this at some point, but for now I can enjoy my photography at a less frenetic pace than forcing myself to take pictures everyday. I'll stick with PB, but for the time being will be more leisurely in my approach to it. Thanks to everyone, mainly friends but occasional visitors too, who helped me get through by dropping by and offering support, fine words and occasionally even critisism. Thanks also to those of you, again mainly friends - but not always, who have proved to be inspirations. Giving me ideas from your your daily postings. Overall I‘d recommend Project 365 to anyone. And sometime soon, I'll do a post to explain why. Thanks All, JJ

364. Digital Advantage

----------------------------------------------------------------------- I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, if it weren’t for digital technology I don’t think photography would be my hobby. My skills just aren’t good enough to cut the mustard with film photography. It would cost me far too much to get far too disappointing results. It seems to me that you could depict the photographic skills of any given population on a pretty standard bell-curve. There will be some who are so brilliant that this comparatively new technology may not improve their pictures at all. There will be some at the other end of the scale who are so hopeless that no amount of technology will help them. But, for the majority of us in the middle there are substantial gains to be had from using digital as opposed to film. Poor photographers have the chance to produce mediocre pictures, mediocre photographers can produce good pictures, and good ones can produce pictures that with the old technology only the very good would have managed. It seems to me that unless you are lucky enough (competent enough to afford) to use medium format, large format or some other specialist form of film camera, there is no reason at all not to use digital. This post centres on the advantages of digital photography as I see it. As ever though, I’d love to know other people’s experiences. What are the benefits for you? Are there some new advantages/tricks for me to learn?
