60.Morning Glory

2009.11.17

Bush Morning Glory (Ipomoea carnea ssp. fistulosa)
Thanks to Divya for helping me in identification.

The flower usually lasts for a single morning and dies in the afternoon. On a cloudy day, the flower may last until night. New flowers bloom each day.
This morning glory has pink flowers, with a darker more purplish throat, 2 to 3.5 inches long (5-9 cm), up to 4.4 inches in diameter (11 cm).

The flowers usually start to fade a couple of hours before the petals start showing visible curling. They prefer full sun throughout the day and mesic soils.
Some morning glories, such as Ipomoea muricata, are night blooming flowers.

The seeds of many species of morning glory contain ergot alkaloids such as the hallucinogenic ergonovine and ergine (LSA). Seeds of I. tricolor and T. corymbosa (syn. R. corymbosa) are used as psychedelics. The seeds can produce a similar effect to LSD when taken in the hundreds
